Reflection Unit 2
From the text of what is pop culture, I have learned that pop culture is that collection of objects, people, events, and places that serves to mirror society and its members and to reflect their values and preferences. If we break down the term into its two components: popular and culture, popular means “of the people”, the common people or the population at large, not the elite or chosen few. Culture refers to the body of beliefs, behaviors, values and thoughts that influence us every day. It is a different definition from that we learned from unit one. There are four components of pop culture: object, people, places and events. At the same time, pop culture not only reflects our tastes and preferences but plays a a role in determining future fads and trends. In this unit, we have finished two presentations about popular culture. Because of this, I researched information and learned more about Stephen Hawking. He lived more than 50 years from getting illness to death, which broke doctor’s prediction.
I researched the meaning of fad and the fad of 1950s. Then we discussed and shared the fad that we searched in class. Mine is telephone booth stuffing. When I was doing this search, I found the picture of it and some descriptions. I was so amazing that it was started in South Africa where 25 students packed themselves into a booth until no one else could fit inside. They claimed they had set a world record. Soon, many colleges around the world were trying to beat the record. My Aha moment was when I learned about this fad. It was so interesting.
The bumper sticker I created is fad or trend. We have learned many popular cultures in this unit like people (William Shakespeare, Hastsune Miku), musics (Jolene, Beat it), TV shows (Tom and Jerry, Friends), objects (iPhone, GIF). Some of them are trends, and some are fads. Something around us will last a long time, but something had already stopped at that time. All the popular cultures that can be handed down are worth carrying forward.

I did not know the meaning of fad and even did not know that it is a word. I just know trend. They are a couple. Because of the text, I searched this word that means something that people like or do for a short time, or that is fashionable for a short time. Before learning it, I just used unpopular thing any more to describe fad. Now I know fad that I can shortly describe something in a noun. For example, telephone booth is a fad.
