Course Reflection

                                  

        At first, I was honored to take pop culture class, which made me learn more about American culture. It was a good class to me when I just came to Chicago a few weeks at the beginning. As the class taught me, I was in the stage of culture shock. However, this class gave me a chance to learn about American culture, which won’t make me feel sick.

      In this class, I have learned that culture is learned, not inherited. Culture is all around us that we get traditional culture from our older generation by learning from them and we get pop culture by learning from websites or other people. Then culture is spread because we share it with others. I have learned that anything in our life can be culture like language, music, movie, clothing, etc. I think culture is diversified that people are from different countries with different culture and we should learn to accept their culture.

In unit 2, I have learned that pop culture includes objects, people, events, and places, so pop culture also lives around us. Pop culture can be divided into two situation: trend and fad. I have learned that something was popular at that time but now not popular any more, which is called fad.

 In unit 3, I have learned that the eight main categories of film are action, comedy, crime, horror, melodramas, musicals, romance, and sci-fi. And I have learned that a kind of movie can be changed to a genre of movie.

In unit 4, I have learned in the beginning, the youth were limited to listen pop music because their parents did not like it. However, pop music becomes more violent and sexual and dominate the Billboard charts today. Another thing I have learned is Blues was firstly created by African Americans. And Blues had an influence on Rap music.

Except for these things I have learned from unit 1 to unit 4, I got some useful tool. For example, smore. I can use it to make a long poster with pictures and videos.

Through this class, we can communicate with each classmate about our own culture, our favorite movie and song. We can learn more different culture from other places.
